15,000 Alabama Students to Get OLPC Laptops
Every student in grades one through eight in the Birmingham city school system will receive a laptop computer under a tentative agreement Mayor-elect Larry Langford has reached with a foundation that provides computers in developing countries, an adviser to Langford said Monday.
"Over 15,000 children will be receiving their own personal laptops," said John Katopodis, a longtime Langford friend who is negotiating with the One Laptop Per Child foundation on Langford's behalf. - Barnett Wright, Birmingham News

OLPC = One Laptop per Child. The website is at http://laptop.org/

Of course, this would mean breaking out of the mindset that computer technology (or technology in general) serves no useful purpose, or being fearful of our children knowing more than we know. If one student can use one of these laptops to get one task done, they will have done something many politicians can't do today.
